Drinkup News

Abstract from Motor Neurone Disease Association –
The News, May 2010

WITHOUT even considering the clinical importance, most of us feel much better when our bodies are well hydrated and we value our independence above all else. But what happens when you are unable to lift a cup or drink through a straw?

About 13 years ago my Gran broke both arms and lower jaw. Whilst in hospital she became very distressed, not being able to drink without constantly asking for help. Needless to say she quickly became dehydrated. I knew something had to be done for her.

At the time I had a small business designing and making furniture, so the next day I went into the workshop and made a simple gadget that enabled her to drink whenever she wanted. It worked a treat and the nurses seemed quite impressed.

I then researched the problem of dehydration and looked at what was on the market. It appeared there was certainly a need for a versatile yet simple product, or a system which could be used in many different situations, by people with various levels of mobility.

After months of engineering design, further prototyping, making machine tools and sourcing the best components from around the world, including the iconic water jug from NHS Supplies, we were ready with our first thousand Drinkup units.

In 2008 we started vigorous awareness campaigns. We focused on elderly care in General Hospitals and paralysis in Spinal Cord Injury centres. We delivered hundreds of emails and letters to organisations dealing with degenerative diseases.

Recently we were invited to meet the Patient Care Team at national office, so we could demonstrate and report our progress with the Drinkup System.

There are about 500 Drinkups being used around the world, mostly in the UK and Europe and several in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

More interestingly, Drinkup can be set-up in a ‘safe-siphon’ mode, to deliver fluid to people who are unable to suck or use normal straws. Drinkup may also be used with thickened fluids or nutritional drinks.

The Team agreed that it was clear that some other people with MND may find Drinkup very useful. If you would like more information, please visit our website: www.drinkup.uk.com
or phone Chris on 01992 632347.

Drinkup Testimonials

December 2009

My name is Lynda, from Kent. I have had a table-top Drinkup system, I have had it for about a year now, and I could not do without it. It has made my life so much easier, as it keeps me hydrated all day without having to keep topping up cups. In fact, I was so impressed with the table-top version that I also brought the wheelchair Drinkup, as we don’t have to look for places to wash out small cups as I have to use thickenup in all my drinks. Both these Drinkups have helped me considerably in more ways than one, and the after care that goes with the product is without doubt second to none. I have no reservations in recommending Drinkup to anyone.

I am a victim of Motor Neurone Disease, 90% paralysed with no hand movement, non existent ability to suck making drinking a nightmare. I was on the point of considering a feeding tube in my stomach with subsequent loss of quality of life. Quite by accident I came across the Drinkup web site and was immediately struck by the safe siphon mode as an answer to my predicament. Delivery to Australia took only four days and setting up the unit was simple. The relief of being able to drink without exhausting effort and constant fear of accidentally inhaling liquid is enormous. I cannot recommend the Drinkup System highly enough, not only does it perform as advertised it is well made and designed. Regards – Chris T, NSW Australia

Hi Chris, Thanks for your note. My sister is now finding the Drinkup Travel Lite quite good. At first she found it difficult to get the water to come up, but I suggested to her to keep her chin down so that she didn't have to suck so hard and this seems to work as long as she remembers. She wasn't too keen on it to start but she is now getting used to it. The sister who recommended it to me is very pleased and says she is now drinking quite a bit more which is the object of the operation. Kind regards - Sally S

Hi Chris, I received the Drinkup on Saturday and I am so pleased with it. Now I can sit and relax when my husband is drinking, without needing to jump up to his rescue. I will recommend the Drinkup to community nurses, occupational therapists and others. I found your website after requesting help from the Disabled Living website. Thanks again, Patricia

Great Oaks Hospice purchased 2 Drinkup systems to be used especially by a gentleman with rapidly advancing MND.  He was wishing to stay as independent as possible so one machine was used in the day hospice and one in his own home.  He used both successfully for a number of months. His condition has changed and he is now unable to control his arms/hands/neck etc himself. From the hospice perspective, huge thanks for the prompt attention, most helpful support and detailed discussions afforded us by Mr. Chris Adams. He is always patient, very informative and truly sensitive to the real needs of our patients.  We look forward to using this device with other patients as the need arises. Thank you for developing such a device that must be so beneficial in many different circumstances. Our best wishes for your continued development of other such devices. Jane H - Clinical Nurse Manager, Great Oaks Hospice, Forest of Dean

Thank you for checking & for your lovely letter that was enclosed. Yes, clearly I have happily received your Travel Lite product & have it installed. I will be using it in conjunction with the Camelbak, attached to my quadriplegic father’s bed here at home, once he is released from hospital. I was entirely unable to find anything remotely suitable in the U.S. Again, thank you for your concerned follow up & much appreciated product. Gabrielle – Arizona, U.S.A.

Best Buy Naidex 2008 must go to Drinkup. This has proved from a Carers point of view that the Drinkup unit saves considerable time in not having to be on hand to serve a drink to my disabled Wife, not only that, but it gives her a bit more independence from not having to pester me every time she needs a drink. It is easy to fill and set up and cleaning with Milton keeps it sterilized. Great Buy. Comments from Terry D - a selfish Carer (unpaid, and untrained).

Dear Chris, I am still absolutely thrilled with my Drinkup system and use it all the time - when out and about in my Rolls Royce, and at home too - I unhook the tube and have the bottle beside me, and at night I put the tube under the pillow so I don't even have to sit up to have a drink. It's absolutely first class. At Naidex, I met another ME person and we've kept in touch ever since as email penpals, and she bought one off you at Naidex too, and she says she's very pleased with it too. Lots of people see me using it when out and about, and have remarked on it, and they are very impressed. Thanks again for lovely products, and great service! Hope you continue to do well. You deserve it. Hope you are well, and enjoying what summer weather we've been having (wot summer weather, he asks...) With best wishes, Sue P

Dear Chris, My Drinkup has duly arrived, thank you very much, and it is great! I am very impressed with the bite valve, which gives a very good flow, much better than I thought it would, and very easy to control. (I am using it overnight as well - excellent to be able to drink without sitting up, as I keep it under my pillow!) It makes a tremendous difference having a drink so readily available, without having to grovel under my feet to find my bottle in the webbing sling under the wheelchair where I keep my stuff. There is also more room under there now the bottle is no longer there. I am thrilled that there is an adaptor available for my Sigg bottle, too - more than I could have expected! I like using this bottle because it has an insulating bag to keep the water cool. I also am very glad to have got the system before our forthcoming holiday. It's such a terrific idea! Very many thanks. It's been an absolute pleasure doing business with you, and I hope you continue to do well with your excellent products which must be helping so many people! Once I've got everything else sorted out from my Naidex visit, I am hoping to get my OT over again, and I shall be sure to show her the Drinkup as I'm sure she's got patients who could benefit from it, and she might not know about it yet. With every good wish, and many thanks again, Sue P

Hi Chris, Just to let you know we used your Travel Lite Drinkup system. We went out for the whole day and it was so good not to have to worry about Lynda getting thirsty. She was able to have a drink when ever she wanted to. In fact it also saved us having to take a special little cup and thickenup powder out with us because it was done before going out. I believe that it was so great an invention that Lynda actually drank more. So thank you for the system, you should be well pleased with yourself. It is something I will be recommending to any one who has the misfortune of being in a wheelchair to buy one. Many thanks for an invention that actually works well. Best wishes - Tony

Many thanks for the Drinkup system. It is brilliant and provides the solution to a problem that we have been struggling with for years. My wife is delighted and it is sufficiently portable that we can move it from room to room during the day, so that it is always accessible. I’ve passed on the details to the MS consultant at

Walkergate Park in Newcastle and the OT who deals with our part of Northumberland – and will continue to publicise it as widely as I can. May I wish you and your colleagues every success. Yours Sincerely Mr. PL - Retired NHS Trust Chairman

Maureen suffers from MS and only has very limited movement in her right hand. Some of the medication Maureen takes is very dehydrating and the Drinkup has made the most tremendous difference, as it has given her greater personal control over her liquid requirements, especially during the night. Maureen has been using the Drinkup for almost eighteen months, and apart from very short stays in hospital she has used it every single day. The Drinkup is positioned so that Maureen only has to turn her head to reach the nozzle, she can use it when she is in bed and also when sitting in her wheelchair. We have found it really easy to keep clean and sterile. To be honest we do not know how she would be able to live without it now, it has given her complete independence over at least one aspect of her life. We are so glad that we went to the Naidex exhibition and saw your invention and hope that you continue to be very successful. Maureen sends you a very big thank you. Maureen & Nikki

Hi Chris, Maureen came out of hospital yesterday afternoon, much to everyone's surprise; she has recovered far faster than anyone expected. The Drinkup was an absolute godsend and of much interest to the nursing staff, unfortunately no-one asked for details! If you would like to contact Maureen her telephone number is (deleted). Maureen has a Possum and is usually able to answer the phone herself. Hope that you enjoyed your week off, I’m sure you more than deserve it.  Best wishes Nikki

I have been meaning to get back to you. My sister-in-law "Valerie" was unable to use Drinkup. The reasons being, she hasn't enough head movement to reconnect herself to it. Having said that Drink up is an excellent device, I would recommend it. Valerie is paralysed from the neck down, if she had been just a little stronger she would have been able to manage it. I have spoken with "Active Assistance" a care agency who specialises in spinal injured people. They are based in Sevenoaks, Kent. They too recommend Drinkup to patients. The one I purchased from you is now being introduced at our small local hospital in Williton. The Occupational therapist said she would demonstrate Drinkup on the stroke unit. Plus she could put anyone who showed interest in it in touch with you. Valerie's carers, like me were excited about Drinkup. It is so flexible, easy to keep clean, and can be used from several different positions. Regards Margaret

February 2008

As a severely disabled person with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) for over 20 years, my RA had got to the stage where I could not hold a cup or feed myself, this you will understand, had many complications. Even thought I have a fairly compensative care package, there are times when I am on my own, and it is during these times that I needed to be able to take a drink. I had tried a few different ideas, straw in jug, straw in heavy bottom mug, that sort of thing, but none of these ideas ever really worked. Once my staff had mastered how to put it all together, the Drinkup and I have lived happily together. Gone are the days when I went to bed and I used books and Kleenex to angle my other jug. Gone are the days when I had problems getting the straw close to my mouth just to see it move within a wink of an eye. In its place is the Drinkup that goes at the side of my bed, two or three adjustments, and then I can drink away. I would give Drinkup 7 out of 10. I am very pleased and grateful that Drinkup was invented. Thank you guys. Ms. ML, Newcastle upon Tyne

February 2008

Twelve months ago I was asked to trial two Drinkup hands free drinking system prototypes. My sons have Duchiens MD and are unable to pick up a cup. Using the devices enabled the boys to drink freely when they wanted to. We found the Drinkup easy to use, fill and keep clean. The increased capacity of the latest Drinkup system gives my sons greater independence to choose how often during the day or night they would like to drink, and the improved extendable arms are easy to adjust, and allow my sons to drink when they are in bed. Ms. SP,

Birmingham

I find the Drinkup system invaluable, being paralysed from the neck down, especially at night; now I no longer have to wake my wife or carer in the middle of the night to ask for a drink when I feel thirsty or dry! Many thanks. Mr. P, Hertfordshire

May 2006

My name is Neil and I am a C4\C5 complete tetraplegic. Recently I have been trialing a new device called the “Drinkup”, designed and patented by Chris Adams Esq. Since using this device my life and the demands on my carer have improved dramatically. For one reason my carer now does not need to be woken up in the middle of the night to provide me with a drink, as this device sits nicely beside my bed and the articulated arm positioned for my access allows me to move my head to one side and take a drink whenever I require or want one. This of course removes the demands on my carer overnight and also eliminates the thought of guilt in my mind, when I do need a drink in the middle of the night, and because of this guilt I usually just end up doing without. I sometimes also use this device during the day if my carer would like to go upstairs and have a rest. To summarise I would like to say that this, long overdue drinking aid, is an excellent design and is extremely easy to use for my carers. It can improve and change the lives of the disabled and the demands on carers alike. Mr. NH, Devon
